This is the easiest forty grams you will eat all day, and it exists mostly because the alternative — deciding what to eat while you are still catching your breath after training — is how good intentions turn into a protein bar. Four ingredients, thirty seconds. The order matters more than anything else here, so read step one before you start throwing things in.

  1. Liquid into the blender first, always. Almond milk goes in before anything else — this is what stops the protein powder cementing itself to the blades in a layer you will be scraping off later.

  2. Add the yogurt, frozen banana, flaxseed, and cinnamon. Blend about twenty seconds, until smooth.

  3. Add the whey last and blend ten seconds more — no longer. Whey whips. Blend it for a minute and you get a glass of foam with a shake underneath it.

  4. Pour over ice and drink it while it is cold.

Why it works after 50

Whey is the fastest-digesting common protein and the highest in leucine, which is the amino acid that does most of the signalling for muscle repair. Worth being honest about the timing, though: the evidence for a narrow post-workout window is much weaker than the supplement industry suggests. What actually matters is your protein total across the day. This shake earns its place because it is the least effortful forty grams available, not because of when you drink it. If you are tracking your daily total in Prime Chapter Health, this is the entry that closes most of the gap on a training day.

Make it yours

Frozen berries instead of banana drops it to about 265 calories. A tablespoon of almond butter adds roughly 100 calories and 3g of protein for a heavier day. If you find whey hard on your stomach, a casein or plant blend works the same way in this recipe — it will be thicker, and it digests more slowly.

Protein figures assume roughly 25g per scoop of the Levels Grass Fed Whey. Check your own tub — scoop sizes vary between brands and between flavors, and the total moves with it. Nutrition figures are estimates calculated from standard ingredient values and will vary with the brands and cuts you use.
