On September 11, 2024, my lab results showed an A1C of 7.2. For context: anything above 6.5 is classified as Type 2 diabetes. I was in my early 70s, my weight had crept up, and my blood sugar had been trending in the wrong direction for a while.
The conversation that followed was the one millions of people in my age group have had: here are the medications we can prescribe to manage this. Metformin. Possibly something stronger later. The framing was management, not reversal.
I said I wanted to try something else first.
"My A1C peaked at 7.2. About nineteen months later, without a single medication, it was 5.8 — and the system that got it there is documented right here."
By April 30, 2026 — about nineteen months later — my A1C was 5.8. No medication. No surgery. No miracle supplement. Diet and exercise, applied consistently, with a system I built and documented myself. At my age there's a law of diminishing returns to pushing it much lower — but I'm still working at it.

Why I Believe This Worked
Blood sugar is, at its core, a fuel management problem. Your body produces insulin to move glucose from your bloodstream into your cells. When you're insulin resistant — which is what Type 2 diabetes essentially is — your cells stop responding properly to insulin, glucose builds up in the blood, and your A1C climbs.
The two things that most directly improve insulin sensitivity are the same two things I focused on: reducing the amount of glucose your body has to manage (diet), and giving your muscles a reason to pull glucose out of your blood on their own (exercise). Everything else I did supported those two mechanisms.
The Diet Changes
I didn't go on a crash diet. I built a sustainable eating system that I've documented in detail in the Body Fuel Guide. The headline version:
The Core Nutrition Changes
- 16:8 intermittent fasting — eating window approximately 11am to 7pm, training fasted in the morning
- Dramatically reduced added sugar — read every label, cut anything with sugar in the first five ingredients
- Protein priority — 0.6 to 1.0g per lb of bodyweight daily, to preserve muscle while losing fat
- Low-glycemic carbohydrates only — vegetables, berries, legumes; no refined carbs, no white rice, minimal bread
- Tracked everything in MyNet Diary — every meal, every day, consistently
- Eliminated alcohol completely during the first three months
- Minimized sodium — it masks progress on the scale and can affect blood pressure
The intermittent fasting piece deserves more explanation because it's where I think a lot of people underestimate the impact. When you compress your eating window to eight hours, you're giving your body sixteen hours where it has no incoming glucose to manage. During that window — especially if you're training fasted — your muscles are pulling glucose directly from your bloodstream and from glycogen stores. Over time, this consistently lowers fasting blood sugar levels and improves insulin sensitivity.
The hidden sugar issue surprised me even after I thought I knew what I was doing. Ketchup, BBQ sauce, store-bought salad dressings, flavored coffee drinks, low-fat packaged foods — the places sugar hides are numerous and they add up fast. Eliminating processed sauces and condiments entirely was one of the highest-impact single changes I made.
The Exercise Changes
I trained fasted three to four days a week, depending on how busy the week was, using an Upper/Lower/Full Body split. Why Strength Training Matters for Blood Sugar
Muscle tissue is the primary site where your body stores and uses glucose. The more muscle you have, and the more you use it, the more glucose gets pulled out of your bloodstream during and after exercise — independent of insulin. This is called non-insulin-mediated glucose uptake, and it's one of the most powerful mechanisms available to someone with insulin resistance.
Building muscle while losing fat doesn't just make you look and feel better. It fundamentally improves your body's ability to manage blood sugar around the clock — not just during the workout.
I also walked for 20 to 30 minutes on most rest days. Not intense cardio — just movement. Zone 2 walking has a meaningful effect on insulin sensitivity and it's something almost anyone can do regardless of fitness level or joint issues.

The Supplement Stack
I'm careful about overclaiming supplements — most of them are marginal at best. But two in my stack have meaningful evidence for blood sugar management specifically:
Berberine — Thorne 550mg (Amazon, primechapte09-20): has the strongest evidence of anything I take for blood glucose management. Several meta-analyses have shown effects comparable to low-dose metformin in some studies. I'm not making that claim for your situation — talk to your doctor — but this is the supplement I'd point to if someone asked what in my stack specifically targets blood sugar.
Magnesium Glycinate (Amazon, primechapte09-20): magnesium deficiency is extremely common and is associated with insulin resistance. Supplementing it is low-risk, inexpensive, and has the side benefit of significantly improving sleep quality — which matters because poor sleep directly raises cortisol, which raises blood sugar.
What the Numbers Actually Looked Like
A1C is a three-month average — it reflects your blood sugar over the preceding 90 days, not just the day of the test. This means you don't see the impact of your changes immediately. What I tracked daily was fasting blood sugar on my Renpho scale each morning, and weight trend over time. The A1C number just confirmed what the daily data was already showing.
From 7.2 in September 2024, the number came down over the following year and a half to 5.8 by April 2026. Because A1C is a 90-day average, I didn't chase the lab number month to month — I trusted the daily fasting readings and the weight trend, and let each round of bloodwork confirm the direction.
The trajectory wasn't perfectly linear — there were weeks where the scale didn't move and weeks where blood sugar crept up after a higher-carb meal. What mattered was the overall direction over weeks and months, not any single data point.
Three Unconventional Things I Also Did
The diet and exercise system I described above is the foundation — I'm confident those changes did the heavy lifting on the A1C numbers. But there were three other things I incorporated that I believe contributed, even if I can't isolate their exact impact. I'm including them because they're specific, they're real, and they're the kind of thing nobody mentions in a standard "lower your blood sugar" article.
Millet Instead of Rice, Bread, and Pasta
I eliminated white rice, bread, and pasta entirely. Not reduced — eliminated. In their place, two to three times a week, I ate millet-based alternatives: millet rice, dosa, or millet flatbread. These appeared as sides alongside pan-fried vegetables and salad, with whatever protein was the main course that day.
Millet has a significantly lower glycemic index than white rice or wheat bread — it raises blood sugar more slowly and less dramatically, which matters considerably when you're managing insulin resistance. It's also higher in fiber and magnesium, both of which support blood glucose regulation. For someone used to eating rice with every meal, the substitution is more of an adjustment than a sacrifice — the texture and satiety are comparable, just less familiar.

Moringa — From My Backyard to Your Smoothie
I have a moringa tree growing in my backyard in Southern California. If you know what moringa is, you might know it as a drumstick tree — it produces long, ridged pods that are a staple in South Indian cooking. I boiled the fresh drumsticks, extracted the soft interior by scraping with my teeth, and drank the remaining liquid with cumin powder, salt, and pepper. It's a ritual I grew up adjacent to, and it's genuinely delicious once you're used to it.
I'm telling you this because I want to be honest: that version is mostly inaccessible to people who don't have a moringa tree or live near an Indian grocery market that carries fresh drumsticks. The backyard tree is not a realistic recommendation for most people reading this.
What is realistic is moringa powder. Bone Broth — Daily, Throughout the Day
This one is less directly about blood sugar and more about the broader metabolic environment that supports everything else. I drank bone broth consistently throughout the day, both homemade and store-bought powder versions.
The homemade version came from soup bones and short ribs from our local butcher, simmered for days in a smart cooker until the collagen fully broke down into gelatin. The result is deeply savory, high in protein, rich in glycine and proline, and genuinely satisfying between meals in a way that prevents the blood sugar swings that come from snacking on carbohydrates.

The mechanism here isn't direct blood sugar management — it's replacing the habits (snacking, grazing, carbohydrate-heavy drinks) that cause blood sugar to spike repeatedly throughout the day. A cup of bone broth at 10am instead of a granola bar changes your blood sugar trajectory for the entire morning.
What I Would Tell Someone Starting Today
The single most important thing is tracking. Not obsessively, not in a way that makes eating anxious or joyless — but consistently. What you don't measure, you can't manage. The second most important thing is protein. Most people reducing carbohydrates don't eat nearly enough protein to protect their muscle mass. Losing fat and muscle simultaneously is common and it works against you — muscle is what uses glucose. Hitting 0.6 to 1.0g of protein per pound of bodyweight daily is non-negotiable if you want the fat loss to come from fat, not from the metabolically active tissue you need most.
The third thing is patience with the A1C number specifically. It's a lagging indicator. You won't see it move for at least six weeks even if you're doing everything right. Trust the daily fasting blood sugar readings and the weight trend, and let the A1C confirm what you already know is happening.

Why This Matters Beyond My Own Numbers
According to the CDC, more than 38 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes and another 98 million have pre-diabetes. The majority are over 45. The standard medical response is medication management — which is appropriate in many cases and genuinely necessary in some. But the first-line recommendation before medication, according to the American Diabetes Association itself, is lifestyle intervention: diet and exercise.
The problem is that "diet and exercise" as a recommendation is almost useless without a specific, documented system to follow. This article is my attempt to provide one — grounded in what actually worked, at 72, starting from an A1C of 7.2.
